Procedure/Assignment

Students will listen to an audio recording of a poem, while following along with printed handouts of the poem. A close reading and analysis will then be done of the poem using an overhead projector. Students will then get into small groups and analyze a new poem in comparison with the first, while identifying which poetic elements are most important in developing the meaning of each. The class will regroup to participate in a discussion comparing their results. Students will then be asked to write a one-page analysis of how the poetic elements used contribute to the meaning of the poem.
